In Chinese Culture, Water has always been related to Wealth; there are many Chinese Sayings like: “水为财”, “近山贵，近水富”, “山管人丁，水管财”, etc…..This shows the importance and the power of water, and also our perception about how water can be administered to enable people to improve their wealth capacity. In Classical Feng Shui, water is one medium to enable the vibrant Life Energy or Qi to be collected and gathered at the boundary of water.

In a good and conducive greater external environment, it is auspicious to have water located in front of the building or property so as to gather the Qi in this Bright Hall or Ming-Tang (明堂) , and with the property being protected by your left and right embraces, which are usually hills or mountain ranges. In urban cities, these could be buildings and higher grounds. Your property should also be supported from the back; i.e. High grounds, hill, building, etc. and in front with a Table Mountain or An-Shan (案山), so that the Qi can be locked into the Bright Hall. With this formation, it would be beneficial to the residents.

As natural placement of water in the right location, in the right timing, and in the greater external environment is not easily found and ascertained, as such, people are constructing man-made pools and ponds in front or in close proximity in their living environment. With water in this location, and which is also protected with the Left and Right embraces, back and front supported, this formation will benefit people residing in this region. There are sayings like: “穴前明堂正中处，喜得丽水聚天心” and “水聚天心，富贵万金”. These verses shows the importance and power of water that would bring great fortune and wealth to the people living in this area.

If a building edge of Unit A is pointing straight to its neighbouring Unit B, then negative Sha Qi (形煞) or bad energy will be directed to Unit B. Depending on the edge pointing angle to Unit B, some occupants staying in Unit B might be more prone to bad fortune at a specific time. It could be personal injuries, accidents, health issues, loss of wealth; or rather a higher chance where things might just go wrong for him or her and unfavourable happenings might occur in a specific year.

Recently a friend of mine visited a couple of properties and observed that some of the units or buildings were rather close to each other within their development premises, and this could be unfavourable, Feng Shui wise. 

Whether these properties are bought with the intent to be an investment, for a short-term stay or long-term as your Dream Home, the occupants may encounter some bad endeavours which could affect their well-being and wealth-related problems.

Example #1:

The building edge of Unit A is pointing to Unit B in the Northwest direction. This would affect the Father, an elderly individual staying in the unit with a health issue related to the lung, bone or head, and could occur in the Dog or Boar years or in the month of Oct or Nov.

If you are more observant, you could spot some of the new large housing developments where they are being built with their building edges directing to their neighbouring blocks. The reason for it could be to align all the units facing their beautiful pool view, greenery or the North/South orientation, a property’s facing where most buyers would prefer.

The property as mentioned here could be a standalone, terrace or townhouse, or High-rise apartments or condominiums.

Example #2:

Should Unit A is pointing at Unit B from the East direction, then it would affect the eldest son and more prone to wood-related illness; like liver, leg, hair, etc. As for Unit D, it would affect the middle daughter if the building's edge is pointing in the South direction by Unit C. Probable illness would be related to the heart or the eyes.

In Feng Shui, the external environment plays an important role in assessing a property; whether it is a residential or commercial property. The other 3 factors are the Building, the People and Time.

The 4 important factors of Classical Feng Shui

In Classical Feng Shui, it is about natural life energy or Qi, and how this Qi flows and meanders in the external environment, and how it can be harnessed and channelled into and circulating within the house, benefiting the occupants to achieve their goals in life.

Those who practice New Age Feng Shui would say that they could improve and even enhance the internal Feng Shui of their house with objects and figurines, turning a bad Feng Shui property into a good. However, be mindful that this “quick fix” solution for the interior of the property may not be good enough as you have not fixed the external yet.

I can still remember couple of years ago where my teacher used to say this popular verse: If a person does not have hair, he cannot perm hair. This can best be explained that if the quality of the presence of Qi is poor in the external environment, there is little you can do to usher it into the house, then whatsoever Feng Shui formula and remedial fixes that you can do and have done to improve the Feng Shui of the house could be redundant and useless.

Verse to Remember:

If a person does not have hair, he cannot perm hair.

Hence, a good external environment should always be the most important factor in Feng Shui perspective when assessing the “health” of the property.

Below is an illustration of how the surrounding environment affects the Feng Shui of the property, and this could indirectly affecting the well being of the occupants. More illustrations that can commonly be seen in our housing development will be shared in future articles. The property as mentioned here could be a standalone house, terrace, town house or an apartment/condominium building with many units.

If there is a busy road, highway or waterway on the left or the back of the property, the occupants in this property will first prosper and bless with good fortune and people luck. However, as time goes by, it will turn from good to bad. Hence, this type of property is preferred for short-term stay and investment, but not advisable for long-term living.

Lower Cycle, Period 8 starts from 2004 - 2023 

Generally, in Period 8 which starts from 2004 - 2023, properties facing Southeast, Northeast, Northwest and Southwest are most preferred as mentioned in most Feng Shui classical texts.

With good external environment, as well as appropriate placement of water and supportive home layout, it could usher good Wealth opportunities as well as good People luck to the residents.

Using the 2 recently launched Period 8 landed development; The Shoreline Residences I and II and Haus @ Serangoon Garden as illustrations, these development comprising of units that are generally Southwest and Northeast facing. Some of the units have good supportive home layout, conforming to Feng Shui Principles.

About Period 8…
To define what is Period 8, it will be good to first talk about What is "3 Cycles 9 Periods". 

The “3 Cycles 9 Periods” (三元九运) is about cyclical Qi transformation which made up of 3 cycles of 60 years and in each 60 years, it is further grouped into 3 periods of 20 years.

The “3 Cycles” (三元) are classified into the Upper Cycle, Middle Cycle and Lower Cycle, and every cycle can be defined as 60 years. Since there are 3 cycles, these are summed up to 180 years. When the 180 years are reached, the cycles will “restart” and commences from the Upper Cycle all over again.

As for the “9 Periods” (九运), it can be defined as Period 1, Period 2, ….Period 8, Period 9. Starting from 1864, every period governs 20 years. Currently, we are in the Lower Cycle, Period 8 (下元八运) which begins from 2004 till 2023.

More details about a person contacting Heart related problem?

While browsing through the newspapers one day, I saw an article of an individual passed away owing to a heart attack. This reminds me of an ex-colleague who has similar endeavour but has survived and hopefully is fully-recovered. I wish him well.

A person born on 20 Apr 1966, with missing 3 and 8 in the "Health Region" marked in Green

Out of curiosity, I have reviewed his Life Chart, and it seems that he has a missing 3 and 8 in the "Health region" marked in green. In Numbers, these numbers represent fire element, and a missing fire element could denote heart-related problems, which conforms to his heart illness that happened few years ago, although some might claim that it is a mere coincidence.

If there is fine and clear horizontal lines cutting across the region between the eyes (red dot), and the tongue also has lines, then he is more prone to heart related problem. This can further be confirmed if there is a “blue ring” surrounding the pupil (eye) and also a line can be seen at the earlobe area. If you have the abovementioned signs, then you should consider a regular health check.

Although there is hardly any interaction with this ex-colleague, but looking at his gesture and communication with others, as well as based on his Life Chart, it is not difficult to observe tell-tale sign of some of his unique personal traits.

With reference to advance technique, the bed can be allocated in the East sector of the Master Bedroom to be usable and acceptable, Feng Shui per se.

Based on the Home Plan, placing ”water” in the Living/Dining and Balcony Area; like an aquarium or water tank, could be beneficial to improve wealth opportunities and growth. However, this might not be necessary as the Living/Dining and Balcony Area is facing the “natural water” which is the Serangoon Harbour in the North.
